Frequently Asked Questions
Q) I have installed a Shaft Grounding Strap and there is evidence of scoring on my drive shaft. Why is this happening and is there a solution to ensure no further damage occurs?
A) There are two common instances where there is evidence of scoring on the drive shaft. The first results from an error in installation or subsequent tightening of the Shaft Grounding Strap where an installer or owner has placed too greater tension on the strap in its connection to the drive shaft. Clear and concise instructions are provided with the Shaft Grounding Strap and are available on the website for your reference. It is important to note that the purpose of the Shaft Grounding Strap is to provide electrical connectivity and thus it is not necessary to tighten the strap to its full potential.
The second instance relates to the use of alternative lubricants which regularly contain cutting agents. It is necessary to clean to drive shaft and apply petroleum jelly every 500 hours as a minimum to ensure that the drive shaft is adequately protected.
Boat owners are encouraged to monitor the tension of the Shaft Grounding Strap and the lubrication of the drive shaft (ensuring the use of suitable lubricants).
